Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, under section 7 of An Act to give effect to the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement, to amend the Sechelt Indian Band Self-Government Act and the Yukon First Nations Self-Government Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts, chapter 9 of the Statutes of Canada, 2022, fixes October 1, 2022 as the day on which Part 1 of that Act comes into force, other than section 6, which came into force on assent.

Proposal

This Order-in-Council fixes October 1, 2022, as the day on which Part 1, other than section 6, of An Act to give effect to the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement, to amend the Sechelt Indian Band Self-Government Act and the Yukon First Nations Self-Government Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts comes into force.

Objective

The objective is to fix, under section 7 of An Act to give effect to the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement, to amend the Sechelt Indian Band Self-Government Act and the Yukon First Nations Self-Government Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts, chapter 9 of the Statutes of Canada, 2022, October 1, 2022, as the day on which Part 1 of that Act comes into force, other than section 6, which came into force on assent.

Background

Implications

There are no financial implications associated with the Order-in-Council.

Consultation

Canada consulted the Anishinabek Nation and First Nations extensively while negotiating the Governance Agreement. Further, the Anishinabek Nation and signatory First Nations were consulted on the Governance Agreement’s enabling legislation.
