Letters patent creating the King Charles III Coronation Medal

Whereas the Government of Canada considers it desirable that a medal be created for the purpose of marking the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6, 2023;

And whereas the creation of a Canadian honour on this occasion is properly of concern to His Majesty as King of Canada;

Therefore, the Committee of the Privy Council, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, advises His Majesty the King that letters patent do issue under the Great Seal of Canada, to which His Majesty may be graciously pleased to affix His signature, providing that

TO ALL TO WHOM these presents shall come or whom the same may in any way concern,

Greeting :

Whereas the Government of Canada considers it desirable that a medal be created for the purpose of marking the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6, 2023;

And whereas the creation of a Canadian honour on this occasion is properly of concern to His Majesty as King of Canada;

Now know you that We, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council for Canada, do by these presents create a medal to be designated and styled the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

And We direct that the medal shall be governed by the annexed King Charles III Coronation Medal Regulations and that those Regulations may from time to time be amended or repealed by letters patent issued by Us, Our heirs and successors or Our Governor General of Canada on Our behalf.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent and We have caused Our Great Seal of Canada to be affixed to these Letters Patent, which We have signed with Our Royal Hand.

King Charles III Coronation Medal Regulations

Interpretation

1 The following definitions apply in these Regulations.

ex officio nominee
means an individual holding one of the following offices on May 6, 2024:
  • (a) Governor General of Canada;
  • (b) Prime Minister of Canada;
  • (c) Chief Justice of Canada;
  • (d) Speaker of the Senate;
  • (e) Speaker of the House of Commons;
  • (f) member of the Canadian Ministry;
  • (g) Leader of the Opposition;
  • (h) Lieutenant Governor of a province;
  • (i) Provincial Premier;
  • (j) Territorial Commissioner;
  • (k) Territorial Premier;
  • (l) Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada;
  • (m) Senator;
  • (n) member of the House of Commons;
  • (o) Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet;
  • (p) Chief of the Defence Staff;
  • (q) Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • (r) National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations;
  • (s) President of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami; and
  • (t) President of the Métis National Council. (candidat d’office)

means the King Charles III Coronation Medal as described in section 2. (médaille)

Description

2 (1) The medal

(2) The medal is to be suspended from a ribbon 32 mm in width with a red stripe in the centre, 5 mm in width, on each side of which is a white stripe, 2 mm in width, followed by a blue stripe, 9.5 mm in width, and at the edge a red stripe, 2 mm in width.

Eligibility

3 (1) A person is eligible to be awarded the medal if the person

(2) The medal is to be awarded to a person only once.

4 Despite section 3, the Governor General may award the medal in exceptional cases.

5 The total number of medals to be made available to be awarded is as set out in column 2 of the schedule, which medals, unless the Governor General directs otherwise, are to be allocated to each category of nominees set out in column 1 of the schedule.

Nomination Procedure

6 Nominations with respect to a category of nominees set out in column 1 of the schedule are to be submitted by the allocating person or office referred to in column 3 of that item to the Director, Chancellery of Honours, for consideration.

7 The nominations process is to be directed by the allocating person or office referred to in column 3 of the schedule.

8 Awards are to be made by the Governor General, who signs an instrument of award.

Presentation

9 Unless the Governor General directs otherwise, the medal awarded to a person in respect of a category of nominees set out in column 1 of the schedule is forwarded to and presented by the allocating person or office set out in column 3 for that category.

Wearing of Medal

10 The medal is to be worn suspended from the ribbon described in subsection 2(2) in accordance with the order of precedence as determined by the Governor in Council.

11 A person to whom the medal has been awarded may wear a miniature of the medal on all occasions when the wearing of miniatures is customary.

Cancellation and Reinstatement

12 (1) The Governor General may, on the recommendation of the Chancellery of Honours,

(2) If the award of a medal is cancelled, the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded must be deleted from the register referred to in paragraph 13(c).

14 Nothing in these Regulations limits the right of the Governor General to exercise all powers and authorities of His Majesty in respect of the medal.
