SPECIES AT RISK ACT

Description of Barn Owl, Western population, critical habitat in the Alaksen National Wildlife Area, George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary, and Shoal Harbour Bird Sanctuary

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba), Western population, is listed as threatened on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. In Canada, the Barn Owl, Western population, predominantly inhabits lower-elevation grassland/farmland habitats in southwestern British Columbia. It is a small mammal specialist and cavity nester, known to use a variety of man-made structures for nesting.

The latest Recovery Strategy for the Barn Owl (Tyto alba), Western Population, in Canada identifies critical habitat for the species in a number of areas, including within federally protected areas.

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to subsection 58(2) of the Species at Risk Act, subsection 58(1) of that Act applies, 90 days after this publication, to the critical habitat of the Barn Owl, Western population, identified in the recovery strategy for that species — that is included on the Species at Risk Public Registry — that is found within the Alaksen National Wildlife Area, George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary, and Shoal Harbour Bird Sanctuary described in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Area Regulations made pursuant to the Canada Wildlife Act and in the schedule to the Migratory Bird Sanctuary Regulations made pursuant to the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994.
