AN ACT TO AMEND THE CANADA SHIPPING ACT AND TO MAKE CONSEQUENTIAL AMENDMENTS TO OTHER ACTS

Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport, pursuant to subsection 35(1) of An Act to amend the Canada Shipping Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, assented to on June 11, 1998, being chapter 16 of the Statutes of Canada, 1998, hereby fixes February 25, 2000 as the day on which the following provisions of that Act come into force:
(a) the repeal of the definitions "builder's mortgage", "recorded vessel", "registrar" and "tonnage regulations" in section 2 of the Canada Shipping Act, as enacted by subsection 1(1);
(b) the replacement of the definitions "Canadian ship", "gross tonnage" and "register tonnage" in section 2 of the Canada Shipping Act, as enacted by subsection 1(2);
(c) the addition of the definitions "authorized representative", "bare-boat charter", "net tonnage", "qualified person" and "Register" to section 2 of the Canada Shipping Act, as enacted by subsection 1(4);
(d) sections 2 and 3;
(e) section 16; and
(f) sections 29 to 32.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order fixes February 25, 2000 as the day on which certain provisions of An Act to amend the Canada Shipping Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts come into force.
The purpose of this Order is to bring into force the remaining provisions of chapter 16 of the Statutes of Canada, 1998. The authority to make the new Ship Registration and Tonnage Regulations lies within those provisions.
