Change of Band Name

Whereas, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, the Waskaganish Band has made the annexed By-law No. 134 concerning the change of the Band's name;

And whereas, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of that Act, By-law No. 134 was approved by the electors of the Waskaganish Band at a special Band meeting held on August 22, 2002, at which at least five percent of the electors of the band voted on the matter;

Therefore, Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, hereby approves the annexed By-law No. 134 concerning the change of the Band's name, made by the Waskaganish Band on October 31, 2001.

THE CREES OF THE WASKAGANISH FIRST NATION

BY-LAW NO. 134

Respecting a Change of Band Name

Whereas it is desirable and appropriate to change the Cree, English, and French names of the Waskaganish Band;

Now therefore:

Pursuant to section 16 of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, S.C. 1983-84, c. 18, the Waskaganish Band, acting through its Council at an ordinary meeting of the Council held in Waskaganish, Quebec, on the 31st day of October 2001, hereby enacts the present by-law respecting a change of Band name;

Band Name

1. The legal designation in Cree of the Waskaganish Eeyou, in English of the Waskaganish Band and in French of the Bande de Waskaganish is hereby changed to the following:

In Cree: Waaskaahiikanish Iiyiyuuch Niishtam e Itaskaanesitwaau

In English: The Crees of the Waskaganish First Nation

In French: Les Cris de la Première Nation de Waskaganish

Effective Date

2. This By-law shall not take effect unless approved by the electors of the Waskaganish Band at a special band members meeting or referendum at which at least five percent (5%) of the electors of the Band have voted on the matter.

3. This By-law shall come into force on the date of its publication in the Canada Gazette.

In witness whereof, we have signed this original copy of this by-law at Waskaganish, Quebec, on the 31st day of October 2001 and posted it this 31st day of October 2001.

Whereas, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, the Nemaska Band has made the annexed By-law No. 72 concerning the change of the Band's name;

And whereas, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of that Act, By-law No. 72 was approved by the electors of the Nemaska Band at a special Band meeting held on July 17, 2000, at which at least five percent of the electors of the band voted on the matter;

Therefore Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, pursuant to subsection 16(1) of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, hereby approves the annexed By-law No. 72 concerning the change of the Band's name, made by the Nemaska Band on July 17, 2000.

COUNCIL OF NEMASKA FIRST NATION

BY-LAW NO. 72

Concerning the Change of Band Name

Whereas, pursuant to subsection 12(2) of the Cree-Naskapi (of Quebec) Act, the official designation of the Nemaska Band is a follow:

French: Bande de Nemiscau

English: Nemaska Band

Cree: Nemaskauw Eenouch

Whereas it is expedient to change the French, English, and Cree Name of the Nemaska Band, and the Nemaska Band Council;

Whereas pursuant to section 16 of the Act, a Band may by By-Law change its name;

Be it resolved:

That the Council of the Nemaska Band enacts the present By-Law No. 72 changing the name of the Band from its former version to its new version:

French: From La Bande de Nemiscau to La Nation Crie de Nemaska

English: From the Nemaska Band to the Cree Nation of Nemaska

Cree: From Nemaskauw Eenouch to Nemaskauw Iinuuch

That this By-Law shall come into force on the date of its publication in the Canada Gazette after its approval by the Governor in Council,

That this By-Law is subject to approval of the electors of the Band at which at least 5% of the electors voted on the matter,

That the Band/Corporate Secretary is hereby mandated to do all things necessary or useful to give effect to the foregoing.
